uv steralizer

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not a good one for the pond your building. The reactor size is way too small for the flow you'll need. You'll need atleast a dose 50 mJ UV.

i like the turbo twist, but i havent ever seen a huge one, also i hear the lifegard ones are decent

Is it for fish health or water clarity?

You had mentioned that it will be more of a water garden than fish pond. If you have enough plants, there will be no green water to worry about, and no need for UV. I have water garden myself and have never had green water since the pond was built in 2005. I do have string algae blooms in spring and fall, but a few minutes a day keeps it in check. Once the water warms up and plants start growing again, they use up all extra nutrients avail.

thats correct, im hand shaping a shelf along the entire back of the pond for water Lilly's and i will also have a lot of floating plants in it. i want to have around 10-12 koi, but the total volume is almost 9000 gallons so i don't think thats to heavily stocked. do you have many fish in your water garden?

I have a lot of fish, most are under 8". I feed heavily and I'm assuming they produce a lot of waste since they are all thick and wide.

25-30 goldfish mostly 6-8", a few fry.
1 albino Channel Cat 13" last fall.
Will probably get a few Koi in a couple of years to grow out when I know the housing market is on the move. Don't have Koi now because I think my pond is a little small, but when we move, I plan on having a big enough pond to house some hogs.

Plants (20+ varieties) are mostly marginal, native, and grow like weeds in the summer months. I do more thinning and trimming of plants as my maintenace then anything else. Filtration consists of a 4k gph pump in my skimmer with a Standard Aquascape Bio-Falls filled with Hyacinth in summer. A couple of Blue Matala mats that are rinsed off bi-weekly. Other than that, the plants, rocks and gravel are my main filtration.

ok cool thanks, ya im planning to put alot of hyacinth in the pond since ive heard they really remove alot of nutrients. there will also be a section for a bog that ill fill up with gravel and plant marginals in, water will be pumped through it after it goes through a skimmer filter. BTW how quick has your channel cat grown? i just got one about 2.5" and i want to put him in the pond this summer.

Not very fast in our climate. He really only has about 5 months/year for good growth. I got him at 2-3" too. Put him in the pond after a week of QT in the fall of 08' and never saw him the rest of that season. The following spring he was out and about 4-5" and finished 09' about 7-8". Last year he grew the most (length) since he has learned to like pellets and got 2-3X weekly shrimp feedings at night. I would say he's about 13" now and lean, needs to bulk up this summer.

In Cali, 6"+ a year in growth should not be unusually. I have yet to really power feed since I don't want a 2' cat, yet, and don't like uneaten food ending up in my skimmer.
