UV Steralizers worth the cost?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Worth it all the way!!! I don't have any experience with reef/salt setups, but, if you are actually going to have "fish" in your "fish"tank, then this would be one of the best purchases you could ever make. It pays for itself in no time. The cost of medicating 280 gallons is prohibitive. Even if it is not, it is still a significant expense.

UV will prevent almost all situations where you would need to medicate. I've been running UV on my 265 tall for almost 10 years. Since then, I had to medicate for "fish louse" one time (they hitch-hiked when I bought "something") because they were not water-borne and just hung on the sides of the glass. I used "pond" medication (it was "economical") to get rid of them.

all I will say is that since I added UV lights to my two main tanks a few years ago, I don't think I have ever had a problem with discolored water, nor with sick fish

the one time I had some fish that did get sick, it was concurrent with my UV light being disconnected and I didn't realize it . . . fixed the light, and since then all is good

also, never had any luck with fish spawning before the UV lights, but have seen success since . . . again, might be other factors, but I'm happy with the results
