OK i need a little help,
im not shure which uv to get for a 2 tank 700 gal fw system
my two choices were a 12x36w turbotwist or a diy uv made with 57w aqua uv parts, now both of these are in the same price range(200$)
-i would like to know if normal pvc works for the housing of the diy one or will the uv light affect it?
-which uv should i got with?

thanks in advance, MFK rocks!!!:headbang2

i'm not positive...but i don't believe that standard pvc is good with uv...i think it'll break down easier...there are plastics out there though that are uv resistant...shouldn't be too hard to find either.

I’ve been using UVs for about 5 years and currently have over a half a dozen in use…

For larger UVs I prefer to use Danner lights. I didn’t do any comparison shopping for you but here is the first link I found that included the 40 W (which is also under $200) http://www.aquatichouse.com/UVSterilizer_files/DannerUV.asp

I like Turbo Twists for smaller units, especially ones that will be moved from tank to tank. I believe both are as effective as the other, but the Danner lights are built tough as nails, where Turbo Twist feels like they are made of typical cheap plastic…

To rid the tank of parasites I use a simple “rule of thumb” formula of 1W per 10 gallons of tank volume… and push 10 pgh per 1W of UV power…

That suggests you run a 40W light at 400 (actual) gph on a tank up to 400 gallons… I would still move forward with this set up but while building it you may want plan how to add a second unit down the road IF the single light doesn’t quite cut it…

the choice of the UV sterilizer should be based on the flow rate and what you wish to use it for.
i dont like turbotwist because the replacement bulb are more costly than other bulbs.

pvc will work
i have a hand me down diy uv that is like 32 years old and the pvc and everything else is fine.
"can get link to thread with pix if wanted" ;)
that's good to know about the pvc...i didn't know that, but now my mind's turning with new ideas...lol:naughty:

thanks to all of you for the help,
now that i know i can use normal pvc i will probably build a 57w unit, i will get all the parts (lamp quartz transformer cap o-ring) which will cost 200$ but i will not get the housin, ill just make that myself and this way, save 150$!!!
-now one last question, where should i go to get custom threads on pvc pipe?

BUMP, anyone know whare to get custom tread on pvc pipe
ive seen a tread machine at home depot a while ago but forgot to ask if they did it...
