Hi..

I used to be one of those who'll go crazy when I realise that my water starts clouding up or simply it ain't crystal clear anymore. Till I invested on a UV sterilizer which does what it says.. turning ur water crystal clear..

But is using it really that good and beneficial for my tank and water conditions? Long term does it affect my fishes? :/

I've been using uv for about 3 years now and have seen no adverse affects.

I'm sure there's plenty of other people on here that have been using uv for even longer.

Note: I have no idea on how they would effect plants.

UV sterilizer for a frechwater aquarium is a waste of money and space..Sterilizers are more for saltwater setups.....

I beg to differ and I know a lot of folks who would as well.
UV sterilizers are a great peace of mind for those of us who keep rare and expensive fish as they will kill off harmful microorganisms, not too mention free floating algae, all while keeping the water nice and clear. I'll never run a major system without one.

Ya. Kinda agree with u. I do not know how they're affecting plants. I have live plants in my tank with the uv on and the plants are still fine.. :/

For fish like clown loaches that a prone to things like whitespot a properly set up UV steriliser to help kill parasites in the water column is a good investment, but certainly not a must-have item for the average aquarium. As for water clarity, if you've got problems with algae in the water column then killing it with a UV is really only covering up the symptoms, I'd prefer to figure out and eliminate the root cause of the issue.

But do u guys use the internal or external ones?

The size/style would depend on tank size and intended use; just dealing with green water or actually killing harmful pathogens. To do the latter takes a bit more to get right than the former, you need to have plenty of light, long enough exposure and enough circulation to make it worth while.

Think I'll just continue using it since it causes no harm..

But will it also kill the beneficial bacteria that I add in to my tank and filter media? (API Stress Zyme Plus)
