I'm in the market for one, most likely a stand-alone w/ pump and prefilter etc...

i saw a member using this one: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2750628
of course i will get the 24W version.

Anyone have good long term experience w/ these? keep in mind, i'm using this mainly to prevent/combat disease.

or is there another good stand-alone you can reccomend? thanks.

I use a JBJ submariner 9w in a 40 gal tank, it cleared a really BAD greenwater problem up in a few days. I left it running for a few weeks after to sterilize out any parasites or disease.

For the size, I was impressed, it says it's rated for 100 gal.

its a one piece submersible with a built in powerhead and a filter. Pretty nice for a smaller tank.

for 75 gal, I think the JBJ 9w would be fine. You can open the air valve on the powerhead and slow the flow down quite a lot and that will boost the effective dwell time on the lamp.

Im getting one of these soon I like the JBJ design where you can control flow. I am looking for more of the sterilizer function than killing algae but I suppose algae control is cool. That allows me to kick my little algae eater poop machine to my other tanks. Do these work on green and brown and white algae?

It kills everything that is free floating. So don't evict your algae eaters, they keep the glass and other surfaces clean. Greenwater algae is free floating and makes the water look like pea soup. :irked:

Algae the algae eaters chow down on is growing on stuff, and the UV things wont effect that.

UV will kill off all floating algae, bacteria, parasites and other pests that are free floating in the water.

It will clear hazy murky water from bacterial blooms, but it wont hurt the bio filter.
