if its indoor. not much use unless you dont have enought plants too much light in your planted tank. It helps me a lot in my outdoor tank!

for a planted tank it may not be necessary unless you have a lot of free floating algae you can't get under control no matter what you do...

I have one on my 200G mainly to help prevent algae and to prevent any parasites from surviving in my tank...

Once a UV is set up correctly it can kill most nasties in the water stop them from getting to your fish. So they can save fish but its not 100%.

I am personally looking at getting a few. A friend had a cichlid tank that kept getting white spot and he was losing his viejia so he got a 18W uv and so far no issues anymore.
