About two months ago I got a horrible case of green water algea. I first tried treating it with the recommended lfs chemical... what a mistake that was. I was told how much to put in and how many time to put it in the water. I then watch as my 30 cardinal tatras died one by one... I quickly tried to do an emergency water change, but I was to late. A day later my 5 angels died too. I went back to the lfs hot headed and flipped out on the guy whose name tag said under his name " the fish expert" ha! i got no money back just apologies and claimed success with the same method.

The next week the water was no better all plants had begun to die some were rotting and there were no fish left. Nothing in the tank was even visible anymore.

At the end of that same week I bought a decently expencive set up consisting of a marineland canister filter and a turbo twist uv sterilizer in which i purchased online not at my lfs (not going to give the people who killed my fish anymore of my money). With in two days the water lost all green color and is just slightly hazey. The third day is today and the tank is finally clear and ready to restock.

Just wondering if anyone has had any similar luck with their uv's OR the same problem with the oh so smart "fish experts" at their lfs. (not to talk trash or upset anyone that does work at an lfs).

Oh and HI!.. im new here.

Hi! Welcome to MFK. I run UV on my tanks and both ponds. Some of my tanks get a lot of sunlight, so the UV helps a lot. Chemical algae killers are terrible. They also kill sensitive fish and your bio filter. UV will kill anything free floating. While there is some BB in the water, it is nothing compared to what is in the filter (which the chemicals pass through).

Also, I almost never listen to what the LFS employees have to say. Now that you have found MFK, you wont have to either.:grinno::headbang2

I'm a huge fan of UV lights... I always thought my tanks were crystal clear... but UV lights showed me what crystal clear really looks like ;)
