I was browsing at my local Tractor Supply and I came across a UV sterilizer for ponds. It was pretty cheap price and it was rated for 1200 gallon pond and it was like 13 watts or something. Are they essentially the same thing as the high priced ones at the LFS? They looked the same as the ones there just $100 cheaper. Would it work on my tank(s)?? Would I have to buy a pump for it or can I put it on my intake/outake of any of my canister filters. I have an Eheim 2215 and an Eheim 2028 Pro 2. Thanks.

These are usually big and bulky as compared to aquarium UV.

Make sure it is a UV-C unit.

You have to match the flow rate that the UV needs.

You place it on the output of the canister filter, it it has too much flow you can bypass some of the flow with a "T" and valve before the UV and adjust the flow as needed. I usually underflow mine slightly.

So I need to check the flow rates of my filters and what the UV needs?? I think that's what you meant. As for the size of it, it looked pretty small, wasn't too bulky.

I run UV lights at:

1W per 10 gal of tank volume…
10 gph per 1W of UV light…

This is to fight against parasites, to fight green water / free floating algae I would suggest the same light at 4 times the flow rate…

What brand is the one you saw? I really like Danner UV lights and they are labeled as for ponds. They are also submersible which would be nice for a sump but are too bulky to be kept inside of most aquariums. I keep mine under the stand powered by a canister.
