UV Sterilizer Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the facts behind this are that they take out all the good bacteria from the water, causing the tank to be unstable and in the long run hurting your fish. i honestly have yet to see any hard core proof of this. i read that in a magazine so not my true input but im not sure i would argue this point all the much, considering i have no clue!!

My understanding is that since your fish have no harmful bacteria or parasites in the water, their immune system becomes weak because they aren't using it.

Ive had one running on my 75 for 2 yrs, and my fish are colorful robust and healthy. I have a UV sterilizer rated for 250 gallons on it also which i was told will kill internal parasites if the water passes threw it slower, and so far has proven true as far as i can see. Ive also sold and traded fish and I know they are still alive and healthy in tanks without them. Its controversial, but from my personal experiences i dont see why you would not want a tank with crystal clear water and free of disease(Not one of my fish has been sick since Ive had it litterally) just my 2 cents....

Check out these two articles:

www.koivet.com. Look under "Articles" in "Misc"for UV.

On my tank I "burn" (UV) my water 3 times a week for about 2hrs. The water is excellent. I'm planning on lessening the burn time in the future.
