Hello, I just recently put a backdrop on my tank but I've noticed a bit of a green house effect in my water with algae. I've never had algae in my tank before so I don't really know what to do to combat it. My parents used to have a tank with a uv sterilizer and I kept the uv sterilizer thinking I might have some use for it. But I don't know the first thing about sterilizers so basically what my question is what do I need to do to set this thing up and is it worth the effort or should I just use some sort of chemical? It is a 55g with some gouramis, brown knife, cories, and a pleco (maybe my pleco just got lazy and stopped eating algae lol). Also the uv sterilizer is a tetratec 5watt clarifier. I have a hob dual filter. My understanding is that it is not possible to use a uv sterilizer with a hob. Hopefully I'm wrong. Any input would be appreciated.

Get a canister with 80gph flow and you'll have level 1 sterilization.

By the way, that's cutting it REALLY close, so if you go with more gph you'll only be achieving water clarity.

That's just the requirements for level 1 sterilization for a 55g tank. Take the tank size and multiply by 1.5 and this tells you the gph needed. You then divide that number by 20 and you get the minimum wattage for said gph. Increase the gph, increase the watts needed. I wouldn't use a setup like this as primary filtration. I would run this canister/uv setup with your existing setup.
