UV Sterilizer

depends on the filter you're running. Usually they hook in-line with the plumbing from either canisters or return pumps from sumps.

As for recommended I feel it's definetly not required. I'm also unsure how it would affect the chemistry of the water in a planted tank. Someone else here will hopefully help with that.

i only used a UV for a few days when i got green water on my planted tank. took it off after that. never in all my years of fish keeping have i used one, and i dont have any disease outbreaks. some people swear by them, i think it's not needed.

and theyre plubmed inline with your filter, on the clean water return line

what if i jsut got a hang off penguin 350 75 gal filter... and no sump or nothing.. how do i run the UV

then you would need a separate pump to pull water from the aquarium, through the UV light, and back into the tank. easiest way is to run it inline with a canister filter

Hmm can you show me a link of a good canister filter for a 75g. will i then replace my old filter when i get this one if i do...

They sell chemicals to clear your water at your local fish store. I see them all the time but have never had to use one- I'm unsure if they're good for a planted tank.

FX5 plus UV = waste of uv. UV's need slow flow, very slow, and most canisters are too high of a flow rate. I'd personally run them on an independent pump. I wouldn't run one on a planted tank though.
