Can someone school me on sterilizer, ie; are they really needed, what size would you recommend for a 900gal freshwater aquarium, what brands are best and what are the pros and cons.
Thanks in advance

Nothing, hey

If you are going to have expensive fish in there the cost of a UV may be worth it. Most people wouldn't consider them a necessity. High quality food and water will prevent 95% of the problems you would ever encounter.

What they kill is based on flow rate and UVC bulb wattage. For a given wattage lower flow will kill more things. Higher flow will just kill algae. Lower flow will kill bacteria. Lowest flow will kill parasites, bacteria, and algae.

You can run one independently on its own powerhead or have it plumbed in to your filtration system depending on how your filtration is plumbed.

+1

If it's for a 900 gal you will need to work out the flow rate you will be passing over the UV

A UV is all about the flow rate you are passing over them

TMC vectron are the best on the Market in my eyes

You can get large ones up to 55w but they are a massive unit

I already had 2 x 25w UVs from my 350 gal so just got another 2 and run them back to back

1 x 25w vectron let's you pass 1700 lph throw it so I worked out that if you run 4 back to back then you could run 6800 lph throw it never pass more than they recumbent throw it or they won't do anything as the water won't be in contact with the light for long enought to slow and it will warm the water which is not such a bad thing in some cases but can be a problem in others
In my old tank I was running 1700 lph via 2 x 25w and I couldn't keep the temp below 86

They are great I would recommend them to everyone people who say you don't need them have no idea as they have never used them it's best to be safe than sorry
All the marine guys use them so do pond owners why should the FW tank owners be the only ones no to see they should be using one
