UV sterilizer

Having huge troubles with algae in my tank would a UV sterilizer do it? It is green water algae. Any cons maintaince etc? Please help thinking of getting one.

It doesn't kill algae that grows on the glass or other surfaces, it will help with the free floating spores, and plankton type.

I have a diatom problem were I live and my UV has taken it out. I was surprised but it did the trick.

What a uv sterilizer will kill depends upon fllowrate (contact time of the water with the bulb). Also the uv bulbs need to be changed out occasionally (usually 6-8 nonths depending on use and quality of bulb). Replacing bulbs can be expensive.

The water was clear in about 5 days. I left it running for another month or two and when I took it out for cleaning I never put it back in. It has been a long time since I used the UV filter and I have not had an issue with algae bloom. No need to spend too much money on one because you may only need it for a short time.
