Short answer: yes
I have them on my larger tanks, never had problems with disease, bacterial blooms etc. make sure you get one that is adequate for your tank size, most of the UV units built into canister filters are underpowered.
Dwell time and level of radiation determines efficacy. There are a number of good articles available, google is your friend...

My friend got this and put it on his 90g Tank and I couldn't believe the difference.

That's good one and I used 1 before until it's broke. It's really bulky and limited option how to put (mount) it in your tank, the foam clog really fast if you have heavy stock, best if you have a sump.
