I’m looking to get a true Stage 1/2 UV sterilizer. I’ve read articles that most UV Sterilizers are actually water clarifiers and not true Sterilizers. I don’t have issues with my tank just want to give my goldfish a parasite/virus free environment.. I know it’s more about clean water then it is about sterilizer. Please let me know what’s the best TRUE UV sterilizer for a 65 gallon. Thanks

Single-pass sterilization is really only a concern for drinking water purification where the water goes through once and then is stored for consumption.

The "true sterilizer" argument is like saying filters aren't "true filters" because they let a single particle through.

In recirculating systems, organisms don't have to be killed with a single pass. Multiple passes can have the same effect per the Bunsen-Roscoe rule.

A 25W Aqua Ultraviolet would be a good choice for a 65 gal tank.

Thank you so much for clearing that up. I’m ok with not spending $100’s of dollars anyway..lol

I have no idea if this is factual

I had 20 young Frontosa's that died off over a 4 week period from a couple of days after I got them, water condition was fine and I was doing all the right things.
It was suggested to me that they had come from a breeding set up with UV system and as I didn't have that their little immune systems couldn't fight off the bacteria in my water.

Its like a kid that never gets a cold, their body will never learn how to fight off the infection.

I assume it wouldn't be a problem until you moved the fish to a tank that didn't have a UV Sterilizer on it.

That's if the advice I was given was even true.

Makes a lot of sense. Never looked at it that way. Hopefully I won’t have to move them once I get them established.

UV isn't going to eliminate all the bacteria, not even close.

I wouldn’t even bother with a uv on a tank. I have all my tanks in my sunroom and don’t have algae issues. To me it’s a waste of money.
And as far as killing parasites.... I wouldn’t buy it for that reason. Your water shouldn’t have anything in it to worry about if your fish are otherwise healthy.

Now if we were tanking about an outdoor pond I’d say it’s worth it 100%. I have one on my pond and I have perfectly clear water despite it being in full sun. I can’t speak for how well the sterilizer part works, but I haven’t had any parasite, bacteria, or fungus issues since the move into this pond. So....

^ this.. Excellent post S squint .

UV sterilizers do not lower fish immunity. Here is a definitive article on UV sterilization:

If the goal is to protect fish, maintaining excellent water parameters and quarantining all new fish and plants before introduction to the main tank will go a long way. That said, with picture windows for the outside wall and two large skylights in our living room, our tank is in sunlight all day. We quickly developed a green water problem. Adding a UV sterilizer quickly cleared up the green water. We noticed that our fish injuries healed very quickly. Some of the injuries have been very severe, like a sliced off lower lip :(. We keep no medications on hand and haven't in 13 years. Running a UV sterilizer is peace of mind for us. I will never have a fish tank without running a UV sterilizer.
