I'm looking to get one for a pond about 3000 gallons which gets bad algae growth every spring/summer.

Any good brands to look for?

Any bad brands to look for?

I don't know squat about them and there are so many different brands with such variable prices. Seems like I can get just about the same thing for anywhere from $90 up to $300.

Check for ease of maintenance and cost of replacement bulb (every 6-8mo.s). Sometime you can find the bulbs at a light supply store cheaper than from the manufacturer.

Since your going with a pond UV you might want to go to a strictly pond type forum and ask as 3000 gallons is a lot of water.
I can say this I had green water in some patio tanks I had set up (still do) the sun just turned water green I would change water only to "feed" the green.
UV sterilizer was like MAGIC. I run it 2 days or so once every 2 weeks, etc and boom crystal clear water which stays clear . Initially it took few days to clear the water once cleared only need to run the UV once in awhile never 24/7.
They truly are fantastic . I run mine at slowest setting just in case any parasites which never had but might as well kill two birds with one stone.
Mine is a submariner but thats worthless for what you need.

Ah, Louie, this IS a strictly pond sub-Forum and you won't find more or better expertise anywhere. 3000g is just a nice little pond, not too big not too small.

Since no one else has chimed in yet, I'll ive this much...

Aqua Ultraviolet, Zapp Pure - pricey

Supreme/pondmaster - harder to clean but cheaper

Coralife,
Pentair, Laguna, CalPump - too small (Laguna has clarifiers but they over rate the flow rates)

Emperor Smart HO - Good

Tetra - too pricey for the size

Pondmaster - Good

Oase Bitron too small (they discontinued their larger model)

Cyprio Vorton - Good

Pondlife - too small

GreenFree - OK

Gamma Pond - Good but pricey

Rainbow Lifeguard - Pricey (you can stack the unitstho)

Sentry - "specially" coated bulb for longer life (?) (over rate their flowrate)

That's a start.

Check warranties and return policies of course.

Hozelock UVC 14000? Where the light plugs in.

You didn't specify what filter(s) (or fish for that matter) your using but doubling the filter / UV will only help.
