i am thinking of getting an internal UV sterilizer and was wondering do they have to be on all the time or can i turn it on when the water gets a bit murkey? could i turn it off before i went to sleep? and turn it on when i woke up? would it still work effectively with interuppted on/off patterns? Thanks Matt

If you are using it to control algae in the water, I would suggest just turn it on when you have the problem. Or shorter and shorter periods til you find the right amount of time to control your algae.

Thanks Algea is not an issue in my tank (touch wood lol). it would be used to clarify water and to treat whitespot if i have it. (i have 'scaleless' fish suseptable to treatments). Thanks Matt

I would doubt a UV sterilizer could clear your water then, to clear water it is killing the algae. If algae isnt the issue then you probably want more of a polishing type filter to get all the fine matter out of your water. For treating parasites, I would just keep it on for a few days after all signs of it have gone away. If you arent adding new fish all the time, you shouldnt have any parasites added to tank as well, quarantine is also a good idea if you are concerned. While a good idea I dont personally practice this, but also I dont usually add more fish.

i have alway thought twice about the internal UV as they may make your water boil

they are ment to be turned on 24/7 as far as i know algue and parasites dont sleep

if you are waiting for the algue to show its to later you water is already bad

They don't make the water boil and for them to operate properly and do the job that they are intended for they should be left on 24/7.

never had one so if you say they dont boil the water cool :D

I had an internal UV and I did have problems in the summer with my tropical tank overheating.... I then moved onto an external one hooked up to my Aqua One CF1200... it heats up the cabinet somewhat but appears to be leaving my water at the desired temp :)
