After what's been going on lately, I'm considering adding a UV sterilizer to the aquatic wishlist for the synodontis tank. It's been upsetting and taking a lot of my time.
What's the opinion on them here?.

uvs do very little if your water is not perfect which is usually the case.it will be mostly for your visual pleasure if you cannot figure out why your getting greif!

beleive me im going through it all the time its impossible sometimes to figure stuff out! uvs do work well at killing off meds and if flow is proper it will kill off bacteria and parasites but most of the time its none of those issues.peoples fish die for many reasons 95% of the time is water quality! a simple weekly water change is not enough after time.

I use a Uv on my tank as i use some day light spectrum bulbs it works really well crystal clean water. Reminds me got to change the bulb

I've been keeping and breeding freshwater fish for over 30 years and have never used a UV sterilizer. IMO, a UV sterilizer is not necessary to keep freshwater fish. Water changes, good filtration, live plants if possible, and quarantining new fish are keys to successful fish keeping. Basically, if you provide your fish with good water quality and living conditions, they should be disease free.

Here's my take on it.......I too have been keeping fish for over 30 years and have never found the need or use for one if proper husbandry is practiced.
Water changes and a strict qt process does the same thing, however......

I did recently setup a new system that includes a canister with uv. I turned it on for a few days and the water was noticeably clearer most likely due to it killing off algae in the water column. Granted this is on a new system and ultimately it's my job to find the balance in a new system, but i could see people having a good argument for using one one a pond perhaps for algae conrol

For disease control you would need super low flow rates and much higher quality uv's , and in the end a water change does the same thing.
