I've head if them, I know they're expensive usually, but how well do they work and don't they kill the beneficial bacteria too?

My dads tank is in the main room and gets lots of sunlight.. He used to put in algae killer until his fish got really sick recently. Now he is looking for something else to kill off algae. Would anyone suggest this? It's a freshwater aquarium with an Oscar.

UV only kills mobile/planktonic bacteria, protozoa, and algae. It does not effect the beneficial bacteria that are sessile (attached to the substrate or objects), which most BB is. That is why you use media such as bioballs, lava rock, etc. It also does not kill algae on the glass or objects. Water must be pumped thru a sterilizer at a slow enough rate, to provide the UV enough time to kill, or effect the DNA or its intended victims.

Got it, I'll see if he wants to spend the money to get one. He tends to have trouble with cloudy green water with it being in the sun.. Is there any way to keep it from forming on the glass though? Or is a scrubber the only soluoon
