I know this topic has been discussed before but it wasn't easily found with a search so I will go ahead and start a new thread.

Just finally got around to hooking up a 40 watt lifeguard unit to my tank which I plan on running for 8 or so hours a day on a timer (the pump will always run just not always with the light on) I am running a 500 gph pump on it so give or take 400 gph after very minimal head loss. The unit is rated for up to 1500gph

I was wondering how many people use them?

How much do you run yours?

How many watts and how many GPH you run?

I am also open to discussion of why some people choose not to use them

I pretty much just want to discuss them because this is my first time ever running a uv after 15-20 years in the hobby

I've never used one and honestly don't know why I would need one?? Am I missing the boat? If someone is a big fan of them maybe they can enlighten me:)

I don't know. I got it in with a boat load of stuff including several tanks, heaters and a ton of other accessories for $150. lol Figured since I had it, I'd make use of it! :) I was told to make it portable so I could move it from tank to tank if needed as I can do with my diatom filter.

I understand they can be beneficial but with regular upkeep I don't see a need for them. I know many people use them so I'll be interested to hear other responses.

I have some green water right now due to my planted sump experiment. Rather than mess with how long I leave my lights on to battle it possibly killing my plants I decided to hook up the uv. My swords are just starting to do pretty well and my vals have been doing pretty well from the start. Not sure what sparked the bloom but my tank went from clear to almost anti-freeze green in one day which is strange because I have been running the lights on the same timer for months

When I had mine it was always on... Can't see why you would only run it for a few hours... Kinda defeats the purpose imo

x2 Never have used one.

well did do you have a blue light for night time or transioning into daylight? like my cora life iv got two antic blues that i turn on for about 30 every morning and then turn my whites on(and the blues off) but if the blues get accidently left on then ill get a burst off nesty green, just food for thought..

My lights are on a timer so the white and blues are always on for around 10 hours a day. The switch on the fixture will not allow me to put the blues and whites on different timers or to run the whites without the blues but I can run the blue without the white if that makes any sense lol

I know some people run them 24/7 and I know some people who don't. I am kind of wondering the pros and cons to both methods my self. I am not opposed to running it 24/7 if it makes more sense to do so. I just don't think it would be needed for my particular problem but I might be wrong.

I pretty much got my uv for free which is why it was laying around for a while before I finally decided to install it. Lets see how long it takes to clear out the green I turned it on at around 11am on the 21st
