What are the pros & cons of uv systems for tropical freshwater. Does anyone out there consider them a neccessity? Please explain te reasons to have one or not - I'm almost completely ignorant on the matter.

I consider them a neccessity because they kill all paracites and desiease before it harms your fish. its insurance. if you really love your fish you would think it was worth it.
If you really loved your fish you'd put new arrivals thru a proper quarantine period and head off any problems before they get started in your main display tank.

add heat to the water
cost money to buy
cost money to run
have to be removed from the system monthly for maintenence
need to have replacement bulbs on hand
possible source of water leakage
pros
can elimanate free floating algae(green water syndrome)
properly flow rated they can eliminate parasites and some virii
