I have a 55 gallon tank, with a 50 gallon sump, the sump has about 20 gallons of water, and 5 gallons of bio-media; in it at all times. The sump is feed by two 1" overflows; the tank is feed by a little giant pes-800-pw, the pump claims 750gph at 60" my height is 62". So my best guess is that I am running around 700gph, but I have not measured to know for sure.

I don't know much about uv units, I really don't want on that goes inline, because I am afraid it will kill my GPH on the return line. So I wanted to get one and place a small pump to pump water from the sump to the uv un and back again.

My question is this, A is that stupid and wasteful to pull the water from the sump and put it right back, does it have to go from the sump to the tank?

If it’s not stupid and can be done, do I have to pump water into the uv as fast as its being pump out of the sump? I was thinking I could pump it slower into the uv and get better results.

yes that will work......depending on the uv unit its wattage will determine the max flow rate for the uv ( slow enough to kill the bad guys). this will mix with the sump water which is changing at 750 gph.....

So, it would be ok for me to get another 250gph pump, a uv unit, and place that in the sump.

is the uv rated for 250 gph ??

I have seen some rated at that, but I have found most are at 100 gph but work best at 75 gph. Can anyone tell me what one they would get? First I wasn't going to get one as there is very little sun hitting my tank, but then I learned it kills virus's and parasites. My last question is with this being placed in my sump; will this keep me from killing most of my good bacteria, since they should living on the bio media?

once your tank has cycled.......... uv wont hurt the good bacteria attached to all teh surfaces and bio balls etc
