i could get one for under 140 bucks. would go on my 90. have wet/dry and hang on already running. also need to know more about them.
pls and thanks :grinyes:

i am thinking about getting a UV steriliser due to the fish i am keeping i am thinking better safe than sorry.
i think its worth it

What problem are you hoping to fix? or prevent? personaly growing up in a fishkeeping (frshwater) household we never used them and i personaly think they are more problems then they are worth from my research. They cost money to buy and run,They add heat to the
water and need to be taken apart monthly to be cleaned and the bulbs replaced yearly at the least. You'll usually need a seperate pump to run one.
And what do they do? well depending on the flow rate(lower the better) and exposure time
(the longer the better) well it will eliminate floating green algae,it
will destroy bacteria and with the correct flow rate it will destroy floating parasites.
Its the ultimate aquarium toy.You can accomplish the same thing with proper tank maintenence and quarantine procedures-Anne
the above applies to freshwater tanks only

Howdy,

That's right. UV sterilizers only treat symptoms, not causes. UVs are end-of-the-pipe thinking :screwy: Proper tank maintenance is the only way to go. If you still have problems, then you need to upgrade tank and/or filtration.

hell no! im not getting a seperate filter to run one. monthly cleaning and yearly changes seems a little much. im leaning towards no.

BTW im not having problems, just trying to prevent them

''BTW im not having problems, just trying to prevent them''
You can prevent 99% of possible problems simply by the quarantine of new fish-Anne

I think there is also such a thing as having your tank 'too sterile'. I have no personal experience with this but have heard from a few people that UV sterilisation can reduce the fishes natural immune system. By destroying all harmful organic components in the water, the fishes immune system has nothing to fight against and therefore weakens because its not needed. It only takes exposure to a harmful organism again and your fishes immune system cant cope?

sounds like a good theory to me

I got one, for my 90, it’s an 8 watt. My tank is in the living room and got a lot of sunlight, resulting in a lot of algae growth. True, I could have “prevented” the problem by closing my drapes, but I like natural light and so do my fish. It takes care of the green water. It also helps to eradicate sickness in the tank. I was able to add it directly to my return line from my sump. All I had to do was cut the line, and if I decide to remove it, the cost of hose might cost $ 0.50.

The bulb I clean out every couple of months, its never dirty, I am just cleaning everything else so why not… And the 8 watt bulbs, that work for a couple of years effectively, cost me a whopping $9.00 at the hardware store (that I have not had to buy yet). As for the increasing temperature, 8 watts for 90 gallons. Well, I don’t know anyone who thinks an 8 watt heater can heat a 90 gallon tank.

BTW. Not only does it work as an after thought. It also works for a preventative, for that 1% when quarantine doesn't work. Stopping contagious disease… bacteria, even Viruses... Or you could just use it to help keep the green water at bay.

just an alternative oppinion.

yes they are well worth the money white spot fungus or any kind of parasites i havnt had any of them in my tank since the late 80s dont knock it until you have tryed it millions of salt tank keepers cant be wrong
