uvb bulb = algae?

okay so i got a uvb bulb with fixture and was told it might create some crazy algae..i was researching and saw that if i can block the bulb with acrylic then algae would not be created. im only using the light to make my plants grow so yeah.. if theres any other bulbs i can use just to make my plants grow please let me know thanks a bunch

just use a regular fluorescent bulb around the 6700 k range... no need to spend the extra money on a uvb bulb.

the plants that you can grow will depend on the wattage, but there are a few plants that will grow just fine with minimal light.
 
you might get some better answers in the planted forum, I learned a lot about planted tanks just from the stickies in that forum.

what plants are you trying to grow?

Like joe said, different plants require different amounts of lights.

Drsfostersmith.com is having a sale on some light fixtures right now, you can probably pick some up while they are on sale.
