I just noticed today while doing a water change that one of my Red Mammon/Super King Kong Parrots has what looked like a prolapsed anus. I normally do water changes every 2-3 days. Upon closer inspection I saw that his/her anus was indeed turned inside out and hanging out of the body. The intestines also appeared to be irritated and swollen though I saw no signs of injury or worms. I separated him/her from the community and moved him/her to a 10 gallon sick tank. I then added salt(API) to the sick tank. Before doing so I had checked parameters in both tanks.
Temp 82F
Nitrite 0ppm
Nitrate 20ppm approx.
PH 7.0
This issue literally happened between 2:00am(when I went to sleep) and 7:40am when I started the water change. I had been observing the tank closely last night as I just added 2 new additions and was monitoring aggression. The SKKP was acting fine color was good and even seemed to be going through breeding motions with my other SKKP just last night. Appetite is unaffected and even today the SKKP was acting normal with the exception of the prolapsed anus. I would post pictures but literally within minutes of separating the SKKP and dosing with salt the prolapsed anus retracted.

I have searched the internet and came up with very little, so I'm turning here. Though the symptom has disappeared I'm worried that the problem has not so I would appreciate any help you guys might be able to give. Thank you in advance,

Kolt

Stop feeding for about three days to rest the digestive system. Treat with 1 teaspoon full of epsom salt per 5 gallons of tank water for 24 hours in the hospital tank. Then do a large water change. What are you feeding? This is sometimes caused by a diet too high in meat proteen causing constipation and pressure.

Thank you for the response I truly appreciate it. I'm usually very proactive so have limited dealings with disease(knock on wood). I think I've only dealt with Ick twice and Velvet once and that's pretty much the limit of my dealings with disease(again knock on wood). I usually feed them heavy one day then they get a break for a day so it's usually on one day off the next. I feed my Datnoids shrimp stuffed with Wardleys Cichlid Crumble and Hikari Cichlid Gold, which I only mention because the SKKP does steal it occasionally. In General the rest get a mix of Wardleys Cichlid Crumble, Tetra Color Flakes and Bits, Nutrafin Max Flakes, Tetra Veggie Flakes, Hikari Cichlid Excel and Hikari Cichlid Gold pellets. The SKKP also munches on the Cucumber I put in their for my Royal and Pinecone plecos. Based on what I listed do you have any suggestions for better foods to help with this issue? Is it possible that the low moisture content of the flakes might be causing the problem? Again thanks for the help, hopefully you can help me figure out what I'm doing wrong.

You may be doing nothing wrong. If it eats the veggies I doubt the issue is a low moisture content. The fish may be just prone to this condition like some humans are prone to some conditions and some aren't. Who knows for sure. Maybe it eats too much on the days you feed it you can try feeding less but feed each day and fast one day a week. I wish I had and absoulte answer for you, but since it retracted rest it for a few days and put it back into the community tank.

Tom said it all.
I have had it with a Jardini eho had her prolapsed anus looking like a pink sausage.

I attribute it to high protein food and fatty food.

Do you, by any chance, feed wonderworms or zoophoba?

Edit. Already saw you do not feed worms.

Look for fat content of food given.

Thanks for help and suggestions I'll definitely take your advice and hopefully it won't happen again. Presently the SKKP in question is still acting fine and the anus hasn't prolapsed thus far.

Thanks for the input, what's funny is I was thinking of increasing the amount of protein and fat in their diet as all the fish in my community are juveniles. So I was going to increase the fat and protein in their diet to help with their growth rates. Guess I'll have to nix that plan.

well, i have a medication call "CLEAR" it's a very well known product in flowerhorn community, plz, tell me how many time do you feed your fish in a week and plz don't do water change every 2-3 days...fish can't handle too much water changes....

So far the problem hasn't reappeared as for feeding I feed every other day so about 4 times a week. As for the water changes I've never had fish that seemed to stress over it until now and I've had some pretty sensitive fish in the past Armatus for instance. How ever the only one who seems stressed in any way is the KML Flowerhorn though he's definitely getting used to it. I noticed he would stress pretty badly during and after water changes but now only during and immediately recovers. I'll keep you guys updated if the condition should resurface.

By the way bro the same Mammon has claimed a rock formation with my newer Mammon constantly in the cave cleaning it expelling sand and defending it together. I haven't tried to sex them but I think they're going through breeding motions. Matter of fact they both bit me vigorously during today's water change defending the cave in tandem. I couldn't chase them away from the cave to try and flush any dirt out as they went off on my hand.

Great news that the sausage has reentered into its den....:)
