 Need to vent...

I got back from vacation yesterday to find out that my 16"+ show quality widebar bar died and my 27"+ silver aro that I grew out from 4".

I knew the person house-sitting for me was not capable of anything more than feeding my fish, so I hired a well known local guy who owns an established tank maintenance company to do weekly water changes for me while I was gone. I even paid him to come by the week before I left so I could show him exactly how I wanted it done. This guy is not some hack. He maintains the display tanks for several high-end seafood restaurants, and is not cheap.

The first time he came, he did the water change and plugged in the pumps, but he never opened the valves. How do you fail to notice that the water is not flowing through the wet-dry? :screwy: It's a rookie mistake! :irked: The oxygen plummeted, ammonia spiked, and I lost 2 of my favorite fishes.

From the limited description I received from my house-sitter, I knew that my aro was gone and thought my uro had died as well. As soon as I walked in, I noticed the uro swimming and that my widebar was gone! Lesson learned; sometimes even the best made plans go wrong. :irked:

wow very sorry to hear about this. Is the maintenance guy going to do anything about this? It sounds like it was obviously his mistake that caused this.

That sucks! Sorry for your loss :( I hope that maintenance guy gave your your money back.

He admits it was his fault and said that he would replace the fish. He primarily handles salt water tanks so I do not know if he knows how much a comparable widebar will cost. I've been a very good customer the past couple of years so hopefully he'll keep his word.

Very sorry, This is another reason for me to stop putting of aquarium automation.

that sucks. sorry to hear.:( man when my parents do stuff like that i cant stand it. theyve lost 3 of my aros and my red tail cat.:(

This was not intended to slam the guy, who I will not name. I'm just disappointed it was my widebar that died. He's a decent guy that made an honest mistake imo, and to his credit he responded to the problem very quickly when he found out about it. He even made 2 extra trips to my house while I was gone. I am confident he will do the right thing... and I've killed plenty of fish in 20 years of fishkeeping because of stupid mistakes too. It happens.

wait, why do you have to shut off valves when you unplug the pump... that is probly why this happend because that makes no sense.

when I do a w/c I just unplug my power bar which has my filters, wet/dry pump and what not plugged into it (minus the lights), then the water drains back into the sump. when I am done refilling I just plug it back in w/ no problems.

So I dont see the need to shut valves off, they are really just to control the flow rate which he probly wasnt used to either which is why he forgot...

I am sorry you lost your fish but your setup just seems weird to me.
