im going on vacation on the 28th of this month. i will be gone for a little over a week. what do i need to do to keep my oscar an pacu alive and healthy for this time? in my 10 i plan to just drop in a food pyramid after doing a water change. should i do a water change on the 55 then put in a couple food pyramids?

Howdy,

Water change a few days before you leave is good. Filters should be somewhat clean. But don't do it all at once.

Besides that, I'd do absolutely nothing. Not even a food pyramid. Healthy fish are perfectly fine for even a few weeks without food.

Happy vacationing

Agree with all previous posters, just change out the water about 70% since you are going out for a while, and make sure filter is running ok, clean out the mechanical part, but not the biological areas, and don't worry about feeding; fish will be fine. Also do a final check on your equipment before you head out.

I agree...that's what I do as well. I do a little over 50% water change and rinse the filters in a bucket of tank water to remove the solids...that's it.

During my time at the pet store I never heard a "those food pyramid things work great" story. I've heard plenty of "they turned my tank into milk" or "they didn't even disolve" stories though.

My biggest issue when I leave is having someone top off the evaporation so my sump pumps don't run dry after a week or two. A lot of movement in my tank makes evaporation happen quickly.

Just thought I'd throw that out in case this may apply.
