This thread is about color variations in Muskie, pike and pickerel.
Feel free to ad any esox related stuff here.

Platinums: platinum pike and Muskie are rare platinums are generally white with black eyes, they may have get or silver on the backs and this is generally where any pattern will be on the fish,in really rare cases there will be white markings visible on the sides,(I call this ivory).
Platinums rarely sunburn.

Albinos occur in pike and muskies (never heard of one in pickerel yet),they are similar to platinums yet have pink or red eyes and are prone to sunburn.

Xanthic: occurs in pike and more rarely muskie and are extremely rare in chain pickerel, some have normal or blue eyes, they do not sunburn, they are generally yellow and may or may not have a white belly.

Blue strain pike and Muskie: these fish have little to no stripes or spots and have a grey-blue color on sides, the back is generally darkish grey.

Silver pike: silver pike generally are a sort of grayish color with less distinct patterning, they also tend to have bigger eyes and straighter jaws.

Hybrids

Besides tiger Muskie there are several hybrid esox most known crosses tend to have more vibrant patterns.
Muskie x Amur pike (not much known ,can get as big as pure Muskie, likely a non extant variety as of now).
Chain pickerel x northern pike grows to about 22 inches and has an extremely noticeable pattern.
Other esox hybrids may occur.

Aberrant blue pike: a odd mutant pike was caught that had blue (particularly around the mouth). To my knowledge no others have been caught.

Striped pike: rare variations in pike have left striped and strangely ocellated pike, some are even produced at hatcheries.

Two-tone pike and Muskie:these fish almost always have a lighter colored front half than back half, cause is unknown.

Others: a neon green pike,a melanistic pike, and several piebald Muskie have also occurred . Remember to practice catch and release! Tight lines!

Adult northern pike prefer temps of around 48 degrees.
Muskie prefer 70 to 75 degrees.
Pickerel like temps around 60- 70 degrees.

Where I live redfin pickerels tend to be more colorful than other areas. I have also caught melanistic individuals and I am searching for a supposed population that has a much smaller size than most redfins..
