A friend has a large catfish, not sure of species. Its about 20" long, from time to time over the years it gets a black raised line on its forehead. Its about 1.5" right now about 1/4" wide with a small streamer of what looks like bloody mucous coming out of it.Hes been basically tossing in misc walmart meds and it seems to go away but it always comes back, now worse than ever.
I know this is tough without pics but he has no camera and no net access,im snowed in here 3' of snow today county will be shut down tomorrow, wont be over his way for a few weeks anyway.

Any ideas,on what it might be or a possible treatment?

What meds were you referring? Does he use carbon to remove the first med before 'tossing' the second one? Doing so will only harm the fish more than help it. Tell him to stop using meds. Determine his water parameters. Good water conditions along with nutritious foods will help it in the meantime until we figure out what exactly is happening to it.

Without the pics and water parameters, proper diagnosis will not be possible.

Thank you for the :spam:
I think I made it clear I dont have a pic.If I did I would have posted it.
The purpose of the post was to see if possibly this wierd thing rang a bell with someone to give me a possible jumping off point to do a little research.

Got a chance to stop by and look at it.
almost like a black solid mushroomy fungus, not soft solid like flesh.maybe an elongated wart?
I had hoped some of the fishes problems would clear up when I talked him into moving it from the 30g it had lived the past 10 years in into a 75g,and doing weird fishkeeper type things like regular waterchanges and cleaning the filters once in a while. It is nice to see the fish swimming for the first time in years cause it has the room, seems healthy and its appetite is still incredible.
