I have been using vasoline on the external seams of my FX5 in an attempt to make it airtight to prevent the swishing noise. I have been reading that vasoline is not safe. Can anyone recommend any alternatives? Any other suggestions on how to make your fx5 airtight. I did a deep clean on the filter this weekend and it actually seemed like the gap on the lid got wider :( No water is leaking but it does makes me wonder about the build quality long term.

There is nothing wrong with the filter or the seals. Its normal for it to get some air trapped in it when servicing it. The filter itself has its own smart purge ability but you can also try and purge it yourself. To do so turn the power of to the filter or unplug it for 30 to 60 seconds. Then power it up or plug it back in. You should get a larger or decent amount of air bubbles come out the outlet. It should have less swishing noise after that. If there is still noise then repeat the power off and on process untill you eliminate the air. Again the filter itself is supposed ti do this but not always does it get it all out. How long are your hoses? If they are to long it can cause the air in the filter have a harder time exiting the filter.

If there was a leak in any seal that seals it externally you would have water running everywhere not a swishing noise.
Also, where did you read Vaseline is not safe? That's not the case. I know hundreds or more aquarist that use it.

I found some other forums where people were saying that vasoline is not safe. Reality is that I place the vasoline on the outside of the filter, so its not like it is going directly in the water.

The swishing noise is not related to the hoses. I change the media setup this past weekend which either has caused some trapped air (I have placed a blue polishing pad on the top basket on top of biomax which I am suspect is causing trapped air) or the air just needs to get vacated like you said. My only real concern is whether vasoline is safe or not. After have this filter for the past 6 months I am catching on how to deal with trapped air :)

The blue polishing pad is the problem. Those get clogged so quickly they cause issues. Pull it out and I be the noise goes away.

Vasoline can be used with no worries. People have bern doing it fir years on seals snd even to coat a noisy impeller. Can't say I've ever heard of any issues from someone using it.

I've been using vaseline for years on my fluval o-rings with no problems at all.

You have been lucky, it is known vaseline degradates rubber.

Petroleum jelly is commonly used as a personal lubricant, although it is not recommended for use with condoms during human sexual activity because it dissolves latex and thus increases the chance of rupture.[11]

It may sound as a joke to many of you but if it dissolves latex it can have the same effect on O-rings.

So dont use vaseline in your o-rings or one of these days you'll wake up to a fooded floor.

Use this to lube your O rings, impeller and shaft.
