Hi' I'm thinking of getting a few UV sterilizer's for my tanks and was wondering how to set them up when using sumps? Looking online most attach to an external filter but i am not using one just the return pumps to the tank which the pipe is wider than an fx5 pipe so doubt it will fit.
Can i get away with putting a pump in the sump and attaching it to the uv sterilizer? If i had a 2 on a 1000litre tank it would still be less than the recommended on the packaging would it not work ? or would it just not be as efficient?
Also are the TMC ones the best?

Yes you can just put a pump in the sump and run the water into the UV then have it either return back to the tank or into the sump.

What you can do with the return from your sump is place a T with a valve to control the water flow coming from it into the UV and then run the line from the UV back into the tank. You should be able to buy a reducing T or just a reducing fitting to drop the tubing size down to what you would need. It's very critical that you control the water flow going through the UV unit or it will not function properly.

TMC UV units are very well build and I have one that's been running for at least 15 years (not the bulbs).

You can run almost any size UV unit with your aquarium, the limiting factor on how efficient the unit runs is dependent on the flow of water going through it. A lower wattage unit will just take longer to have the same effect compared to a larger unit.

Thanks for a detailed answer :) I've got a spare hole at the top of my tank above the water level so think i'll just run it going off a spare bit of hose and buy a small water pump to pump the water through.

That would be the easiest and fastest way to hook it up. Just remember to turn that pump off when your doing a water change or it might drain the sump.

I don't water change ;) Well not manually anyways, auto 24/7 water change in place
