So I was at the grocery store this weekend, and was thinking to myself what kind of veggies should I try to feed my cichlids. I picked up some Lima beans because peas are the only veggie that all 4 of my cichlids will eat and I thought well lima beans are kinda similar to peas.

Low and behold Lima beans were a huge success even my wife's GSPs loved them. So I thought I would ask everyone, what kind of veggies do your cichlids eat? It seems to me that each individual fish has different tastes when it comes to veggies.

Here is what my fish eat

My JD - Peas, corn, asparagus, & lima beans

GT - Peas, broccoli, lima beans

Convict - asparagus, broccoli, peas, lima beans

FM -peas, lima beans, corn

Go easy on that asparagus. Fish grow REALLY fast on it.

I only feed veggies to cichlids that normally eat them in the wild. Veggies are harder to digest then meats, so it could cause digestive problems. If you are looking for fiber then just feed pellets.
The only fish on that list that is a omnivore is a convict, but it should have a more meat based diet. Firemouths will espacially have problems since most of their natural diet is inverts and small fish. I feed mine pellets, blood worms, and swordtail fry.

Both JD & GT are omnivores.

I grind my veggies up and mix them with fish and make my own frozen food out of it. The fish seem to love it. I call it the Salmon/Veggie Delight.

I like this thread i've tryed peas and spinich with no luck on my cichlids.
the one thing i would be concerned about is the corn not sure how it is for cichlids but i have been told that fish love it and i do sometimes use it as bait but that they can't diegest it, somthing do with that much starch

I kinda wondered about that, because I don't think that cichlids are suppose to have non green veggies. My wife feeds it to her GSPs so I gave it a try and a couple of my fish liked it, I have only feed it to them a few just because I was worried that it might not be a good thing for them to eat. I don't think that I will again.
