I plan to get a veil oscar from a lfs (beverly's pet center) and would like to know how to best care for it other than the normal oscar care. he's going in a bare tank all alone, but i will periodically put a mirror up for exercise and occasionally random (smooth) objects in his tank to push around... would it be better to get two and divide the tank? it's big enough for them to live in until they get around 8" then i'll upgrade them.

so any special tips to keep their fins in the best shape? how often should i do water changes? (i usually do once a week, 50% with amquel, and siphon any visible waste off the bare bottom)

How big is the tank??Anything less than 100 gal i wouldnt put a divider in,if your looking for a tremendously happy Oscar just let him have the whole tank to its self, then you dont have to worry about lip locking or torn fins.

I believe the tank is a 90, but you have a point about torn fins. the lip locking wouldn't happen because the divider would seperate the oscars and they would fight through the divider (or breed if it's male and female... lol) i'll just keep a second one in another tank if i even get a second one!

Honestly with my two, I have pretty much never had a problem with torn fins. So long as they have been raised together and all that jazz they get along pretty well, even when they do fight its just some lip locking and tail swatting and they dont damage their fins doing it. There is no need for any real special care for these guys.

Don't put a mirror in the tank, even occasionally. It is much more likely to stress the fish than anything. Flowerhorn owners do this with their fish to get them to display their colors more brightly. It's not recommended for Oscars in my opinion.

thanks! i'm most likely going to just get one, because i'm doing an experiment that studies the learning abilities of predators from florida, SA and africa! all variables need to be consistent, and i only have one fish in each tank (except for the oscar... wanna pick the right one!). if i do get a second one, it'll either be seperated by a divider or in another tank to prevent "social behavior" from interfering with test results...

thanks alot everyone!!! i'll post pics when i get him!

My best advice would be to feed KRILL and only krill this is an argued point but I have found it to make the colors of my oscars come out more than any pellets or any other food Krill is simply amazing for oscars

i'll keep that in mind, but i'll just use it as a supplement for his daily food rations, lol. would raw human-grade shrimp be good for him too? i want to add as much variety as possible... spoil him!

THey will eat absolutely anything but im tellin ya you feed krill daily for 45 days take a pic before and after and you will understand what im talking about. I had a tiger oscar i rescued almost completely black within 3 months i have made him probably the best looking oscar ive ever seen.
