I bought these vejas from my lfs because they were labeled chocolate chiclids and reslly cheap. I did some research and I thought they were peaceful herbavores!? These two guys eat more feeders then my rock bass and they punk everyone in the tank off! Idk if I have done special strain where there mean as hell but anyone else have this issue?

Synspilum. Not crazy aggressive but can be nasty. They are herbivores but will eat anything.

Although Vieja are generalized herbivores/omnivores, they will take a protein meal whenever they can, and as far as being non-aggressive, I don't find that to be true.
When piscivores attack, its mostly simply to eat, but herbivores are often generally more aggressive, and seem to be more territorial at times defending large vegetative tracts.

Here are mine both over 10 " easy they lay eggs quite often,and i have fry but they become protein for the others .. by me there is no interest in these fish i think they are amazing

here is my hybrid with a Rose queen flower horn or as i was told by the person who offered me 750 for him said .. all I know is the male was the same color and little darker than the female . I bought them as red texas from petsmart a year ago. he slowly change to this color in 3 weeks. all i know is he is a 13" beast and she has layed eggs and eaten them before they hatched

Awesome fish guys! The info is much appreciated! I love my vejas. They are growing extremely fast! How can I sex them?

Opportunistic feeders might appear to be non aggressive if there are no tiny "meals" in the tank. I had a peaceful Tinfoil that would shoal happily with my other fish and periodically swallow a danio.


Never owned these, but opinions vary with some calling them peaceful. Certainly there are some more peaceful centrals than these (according to some, bocourti and pearsei, for example), but these are generally not bad actors.

Every fish and tank has it's own personality though.
