i have a 125 with clown loaches currently and wanted to get a Veja synspilum. Would he work with the clown loaches and what other fish could I keep, I have a chocolate cichlid in the tank as well. Would the veja work with him or would I need to sell him. Could I have a group of live bearers In the tank. This will be my first time keeping veja.

I have found vieja/paratheraps are normally OK with livebeares, as long as the loaches have cover should be OK. With other cichlids they can be hit or miss, generally not as aggressive as Amphilophus or parachromis but still capable of becoming hyper dominant. Are you after a solo fish or pair.

My experience with melanura(and any Vieja for that matter) is that they "do" do well with "dis" similar cichlids, and most non-cichlids, but not well with other Vieja or other high bodied similar pan shaped cichlid species. Of course for me, this was in tanks around 150 gallons, but if the tank is 300 gallons plus, there may be enough room for this not to be a problem, in a 125 maybe not.
I agree about the Thorichthys or sometimes Parachromis being suitable
Whether the chocolate is seen as competition is debatable.
If the Vieja does eventually see the chocolate as competition, the chocolate may end up toast.
It will take years, but the clown loaches alone, will outgrow, and become too large for a 125 gal

I have 10” synspilum in a 125 in an otherwise SA community. I have a single chocolate, 2 rotkiel severums, a matched pair of Crenicichla marmorat.
With the exception of the pikes has been together for almost a year. Once things settled down and hierarchy nailed down this became a very peaceful tank. I know it’s only a year but there doesn’t seem to be any signs of this changing.
I had a breeding pair of rivulatus in the tank which I since removed- only because they claimed half the tank not due to bad behavior.
There’s no hard fast rules, what works for you may not work for others but I think with the footprint your are working with it’s worth trying it out.

I kept a female synspilum with a few other cichlids and catfish and found her to be very peaceful I wouldn’t think a male would be as well behaved in anything less than 200 gallon, and has been said try to make sure the other cichlids are dissimilar in appearance
