I’m currently treating a zebrina pike for velvet disease and wondering anyone’s experience with this disease? I originally thought it was ich and treated with an increased of temp to 86 plus 3ppt of salt. When I realized I wasn’t dealing with ich, I was recommended cupramine. I did a 50% water change prior to the medication to reduce the salinity in the tank and reduced the temp down to 81. I also removed the carbon as specified. The pike is still aggressively feeding and so are the tankmates. I saw the velvet had spread to two of the tankmates but now I can no longer see any infection on them. The zebrina however is still clearly infected to the point where I can’t tell if there’s any improvement.

The zebrina either carried the disease in as I failed to qt or was very stressed from import/tank cycling, likely both. The treatment is 48 hours in (just re-dosed) and lights have stayed off. I removed the plants as the salt/temp/meds killed them. Is there anything else I can do or signs to look for in treating this?

Velevet isn’t the easiest to cure. But copper is the preferred treatment. Can cont with salt. Waiting game. Make sure ur checking the copper levels.

To my surprise and current optimism, the velvet appears to have receded from the zebrina and no other fish are exhibiting symptoms. Lights have been off for 5 days with the copper treatment + salt. Pikes turning into a pig at feeding time and no longer hiding. Water parameters are all in check and I don’t want to mess with the medication toxicity so I’m leaving it all alone for the next 5 days.

Do you know how fast carbon would clean out the cupramine once back into the filter? Want to know how long I should wait to do a water change with prime

I am pretty sure the zebrina is still infected as I’m now seeing what looks like a dusting over his head. I really do not know what to do now. I am debating only removing him and treating him an isolated tank.
