My LFS has some extermely expensive Nettereri - 6" Black Majora Piranha @ $100 - they say they stay dark in coloration with little to no reds and juvi 4" Black spot Wild caught Piranha @ $170 supposed to have black spots all life long - I might've been born yesterday but not born stupid -
These were all Nettereri and as common as common can get - see it everyday at feeding time, not to mention the juvi's spots were fading.
Marketing strategy at it's lamist.

Can you try and get some pics of the 6" Black Majora Piranha. There is one new "Form" of pygo that was found thats black...

Furthermore the Black spot wild caught piranha are most likely Pygocentrus Cariba

I'd love to have a shoal of these

They weren't black - silver/greenish with red bellies - common RBP

No they weren't Caribe they were wild caught common RBP juvi's.

The Pic JP put up is what I expected to see esp. for the price.

jp80911,
What species is the piranha in your pic? Twenty years ago good friends of mine owned a LFS and would buy angelfish from a small local breeder who had a pole barn set up with all his fish. I used to be amazed at all cool stuff he had. On one wall he had these concrete burial vaults with two panes of glass in one of the long sides. The first time he let me look around I headed straight for those vaults. One of those vaults contained 10-15 of those fish in your pic. I was told they were serrasalmus niger and he was trying to breed them but he had no success. I was out of fishkeeping for a while. Recently I have been reading that niger is a synonym rhombeus. Those fish I saw were not elongated like a rhom. They had the shape of a RBP but were black and purple with the bright silver sparkles. Sorry for the long post but that pic brought back some great memories. Thanks, Ray

looks like someone spray painted a rhom and then rolled it in glitter haha

i wonder how many people that pet shop will end up ripping off. i'd be so pissed if i paid that much for a RBP

Sweet black pygo JP. Any more info on them?

its not a pygo

most likely a breeding s. spilopleura.

you see how rhombeus look more rhomboid or angular when young and as they get large their heads become more blunt? same with spilopleura or most other serrasalmus when they get over 10"

most piranhas turn very black turning breeding season.

in an old tfh book, there were pictures of this black pygo. that we think were breeding color of p. cariba
