For the longest time I thought this fish was a female due to the fin shape and behavior, but now I'm thinking male. I was able to vent her(him?) today and am hoping for your opinions....

It does look like a male to me. What species is it? Any side shots?

The pics didn't do anythig to sway me one way or the other, however I still think from the vent picture it's a male.

You can't sex EBJD by finnage because their fins are deformed. Neither can you sex them by gill plate color because both sex show the same color. Venting is the only way to go if you know what your are doing. I am no good at vening but try to compare the unknown fish with a fish of known sex side by side. Another clue I use is to compare the two holes. If both holes have the same size, it's male. If the rear hole is bigger, it's a female. Remember the position of the genitial and AO for fish is the reverse for human so you don't mess up which hole to target.

I agree with your statement about sexing EBJD based on fin shape and gill plate covering not being accurate ways to determine gender. The body of the fish just appeared to be round all over which lead me to think it was a female. The thing that threw me off the most was that this fish paired up with one of my proven BGJD males and was filling the female role to a T. It had even had dropped it's breeding tube at one point and it looked very female. They never spawned and the male BGJD was sold. After he was sold the EBJD's fins started growing in, becoming longer and pointer. I guess my next step will be to try and pair him up with one of my smaller females and see what happens. Thank you for your input!

Do you have any more pics of the vent? Like ones a little more to the side? Its hard to see the shape of the vent.

No, unfortunately I don't and its not sticking out at all right now so getting a shot would not work :( If I see its tube sticking out I will get a picture though. I just moved it into a different tank with two females today so we'll see what happens with that. I love this fish and would like to get some fry from it...
