I'm planning out my fish room design. I just built a quick test stand for 20 gallon tanks. I gave myself 8.5" vertical space for maintenance, etc. How much space do you have above your tanks?

I think that should be okay for 20g tanks.
for larger tanks with larger hang on back filters, you may want a bit more though.
maybe 12" for bigger tanks.

As a side note I would play with putting the lighting in the shelf above and just to glass tops on your tanks. I think it would look nice.

Thanks, both of you! This was the CAD render after I designed it, for this stand/area. The area to the right of the stand is off limits (or so says my wife) 
I'm cycling these tanks to test it out now. I'm also experimenting with the background color, and I'm not sure I like how low the bottom tank is. More to come.
