so ive had this oscar for two years, and (by oscar standards) he was pretty timid and shy. He wasn't aggressive at all. a couple of days ago, he became very aggressive and tries to attack my face through the glass. he literally jumps out of the water and practically kills himself in doing so. in fact, he did it so hard once, he started to bleed. If i clean the tank, he constantly tries to bite my fingers and the gravel vacuum. Is this normal? I'm worried that he could really hurt himself. any suggestions? thanks.

size of tank? any tank mates? any thing new added to tank? any spawning behavior? IE cleaning off a flat rock, or more pit digging that usul and then sweeping it with hid/her body? tummy bulge?

sometimes lowering the temperature a little can reduce aggression, if that's what you'd like
;-)

75 gallon tank with a 11 inch oscar, 6 inch jack Dempsey, and four 4 inch silver dollars. i know it is overstocked but they will be going into an 8 by 2 by 2 tank in a couple of months. nitrates Are 20 ppm. There has been a lot of pit digging lately. the only thing that changed was when i went up to the tank a couple of days ago to feed them and he tried to attack me. he appears to be healthy, and he is only aggressive to me, not the other fish.

It's tough to get inside a fishes mind and know exactly what's going on in there. There could be a couple of things at work here, hormones are one, reaching sexual maturity and wanting to breed. It could be trying to expand it's territory beyond the confines of the tank, what people refer to as "glass bangers". I had a big RD that clamed half the family room as it's territory and if you crossed the imaginary line he would go ballistic, like a dog barking through the gate. The same fish in a larger tank may calm right back down. Or it could have just went nuts who knows, but I would suspect it's either one of or a combination of the first two.

pit digging could equal breeding, however its extremely rare to get an SA x CA hybrid. maybe the oscar just doesn't get it.

no sexing an Oscar by sight.
