Noticed that my rays were both moving, eating and breathing very slowly today (P14's and BD's).

- and as soon as I poked the water I knew why. Both heaters were turned off.

The tank is sitting in my garage wich is unheated (the tank is insulated ofc).

A reading showed that the water was 64.4F. The room itself is 55.4F.

It means that they have survived 4 days at around 64F (must have turned the heaters off when I cleaned one of my pumps 4 days ago).

Just goes to show that:

1. I'm a massive moron.
2. Keeping stingrays at high temps is utterly pointless.

And with that little story out of the way, I wish you all a happy new year. :)

Likewise!

Been there twice this year both with my garage tank. First time I unplugged the heater during a large water change and did not plug back in. Temp dropped to 69 but for only a day. The second time I closed the valve on the heater loop to change the filter and never reopened. That time only dropped to 72 for a day

Happened to me when I had a Heater failure, didn't realize for several days. Temp dropped to 67, rays were just sluggish with appetite decreased. Thus one of the reason I keep my tanks at 77-78 degrees.

OOPS DP...........

I keep my tanks between 72-78 lower temps while doing water changes as I run cold only. I never understood why some guys kept there tanks in the 80's seems like a waste of electricity. And I had an issue and had my tank at 58 once and rays all survived ( they weren't happy of course LOL)

Reminds me of a time a coulpe years back. Everybody was talking about how they do cold WC to save money. Middle of January, one month old Motoro pups and 2 6" Retics 50%WC with cold water not even thinking about it. Got done and noticed the rays stayed buried for over an hour. Looked at the tank temp and bout had a cow. The little stick on type thermometer went down to 72 deg. Didnt even registed for 4 hours. So mine went from 78deg to somewhere in the 60's in an hour and had no ill effects...not recommended. lol

My fishroom doesnt have a water heater so I do cold WC. Have debated getting one for years, but knock on wood, have never had too much of an issue. For smaller tanks I warm water up in a big 55 gallon trash can, but for the big tanks that is not an option.

The Medusa Temperature controller has an alarm on it. 2 degrees colder or warmer than normal and it goes off. It has saved me from those same issues more than once! I have been sitting in the living room while doing a water change and all of a sudden hear an alarm going off only to rush in and find the temp on my tanks falling rapidly because the new water is to cold. Instead of a 10 degree drop I was able to stop it at 3. Great piece of equipment and better than most temperature controllers.
