so ive just got an offer on a 6" red belly piranha and i wanted to know if he could be with my other fish. since its just one i thought there attitide might be less aggressive. he would be the smallest one in the tank. and all my fish are SA/CA cichlids who are nice to eachother. any helping feedback welcome.

since red belly piranhas are the most agressive species of piranha I wouldn't put it in my tank my friends piranha killed a bichir almost twice his size

You are right that it'll most likely but a little less aggressive but all it takes is one territorial despute or some lip locking and one of your cichlid is badly hurt. I would not recommend it.

I have to politely disagree with the post above me though. Red Bellies are not "the most aggressive species of piranhas"

I've looked up piranha species for when i was considering putting one in my tank and quite a few sites say its the most agressive

thanks for the great info. know any good links for more info on keeping pirahna?

It helps if we know what exactly you're looking for. Most of what you need can be found in sticky's here (the topics above your post here)

You can check out this website for piranha species information

Where in Washington are you? Near Portland by any chance?

Serrasalmus are far more aggressive than Pygocentrus

I think probably P. piraya, S. marginatus, or S. elongatus would hold the title for most aggressive. Maybe S. brandti. I had an S. compressus that was mean as a rattlesnake too, but with serras I think it comes down to the individual fish.

Really most piranhas aren't aggressive in the same way an SA/CA cichlid is. They don't "display" and only rarely do they glass bang. Piranhas are cold blooded killers. They don't have to be pissed to kill your fish. All it really takes is for the P to be mildly hungry or bored and then they bite the tail of a fish out of instinct. After that it's generally a matter of time before they finish the other fish off.

There's no malice or rage to a piranha. They kill things...it's what they do.
