I dont know if it is common knowledge but Gar are being watched very close to determine their status with the Department of Wildlife's list of vulnerable and indangered species. The status for Alabama is "needs evaluation".
But good news for my neck of the woods. I just got back from fishing Lake XYZ in Alabama (dam made) where I saw tons of large healthy Alligator, Longnose, and Spotted Gar. Even had a couple bite my fluke. (could not set the hook though) A very good sign, at least for my area.
