I came across this thread recently on a Mexican fishing forum. The title of the thread translates as "What Cichlid is this?".

Unfortunately there seem to be a whole lot of Tilapia invading most Mexican waterways, but there are definitely some American Cichlids still there. I am terrible at identifying CA Cichlids (or in this case, NA Cichlids), so if some of you experts can ID some of the fish and repost the photo it would be awesome!

Here is one that I could ID, a monster Petenia splendida. It was caught in the Cañón del Sumidero in Chiapas (Southwestern Mexico).

OK, maybe it was a "sort of" interesting thread, lots of Tilapia and sunfish...

Here are a bunch of photos that I am pretty sure are native fish:

WOW that last silver one (vieja argentea) was a horse. That fish is worth 250+ up in NY/NJ Market.

I wanna go fishing in Mexico :\
Me, too! I've been saltwater fishing, but never any of the reservoirs.

no shiz, that first fish is a beast!
Yeah, I believe it was a record of some sort. Beast for sure!

Yeah, nice nuchal hump on that monster.

Here are my ID's. I'm terrible at most Paratheraps, so those are pretty much just guesses.

Thorichthys of some sort? Lacking the opercular spot which means it would have to be Thorichthys callolepis.

This is an awesome thread!! Fish look so much different when given natural sunlight and diet that it really becomes difficult to tell what we are looking at.

I have to add as well that I was never a very big fan of snook... I can say that once I found out that first picture was of a snook, I became an immediate fan.
