Hey guys, Elblingo again,
Just have some questions about some of the gestation periods and behaviour you have experienced in your fish during pregnancy.
I ask this because in my tropical 55 gallon my Dalmations mollies bred, which is definately nothing unusual, but a few days afterward she was visibly pregnant.
As I normally do I did a heap of research on normal behaviour and gestation periodd, I found out thhat they're never usually more than 30 days, unless theres somethhing wrong with the fry, or the conditions aren't right.
It hit the 40th day and by tis point I was getting worried, she was huge. I checked all my parameters and they were all fine, the tank was definately not overstocked but thhe male Molly as chasing her around 24/7, just mating, all the time, so I separated herr and put her in a breeder net as I didn't have another tank I could set her up in.
She obviously didn't like it and neither did I, I figured she'd be better off with open space.
When it hit the 60 day mark, I had no idea what was going on, she was beyond massive, I had heard stories about Mollies getting too big and actually splitting down the middle, letting all the fry out, but killing the mother.
I know at this point the fry were fully developed, i'm not new to breeding and when I flashed a torch on her stomach you could see little worm like this with eyes, this told me they were ready and willing, but I was still worring about getting up every morning and finding a tank with no fry and a dead molly.
it hit the 75th day and I am just almost giving up, what the hell is going on? she is that big she was having trouble keeping herself upright as she swam.
And finally, on the 75th day, Monday the 25th of March, she had her fry, I wasn't at home and unfortunately all the fry had been eaten.
I am just flabbergasted that a livebearer could even be pregnant for more than 40 days. Was wondering if I had some sort of record on my hands haha :naughty:
