Ok, I got a few questions concerning rays.

What type is the smallest that can be housed in a 10x2 footprint for a few years. I do plan on going bigger but that'll be years from now.

How do they do with cichla?
How do they do with pool filter sand?
And typically, what's their growth rate?

Thanks!

Okay, in a 10 by 2, sadly you don't have enough width for most rays. I'd say hystrix of your planning to go bigger because some get huge. When you do go bigger, perhaps more width and not so much length, maybe upgrade to a 10' by 6', if you can go that big, and then you can get pretty much any ray that is in the genus potamotrygon. Cichla, good, as long as they aren't pecking at the rays, pool filter sand, great. It's a top sand choice among hobbyists. Growth rate, I'm no expert, but 1-2" per month. I'll let the experts chime in there.

Consult the stickies, they're great help.

the length of the tank is good but the width needs to be around 3-4ft to fit a ray more comfortably, I have had my retic for 8 months now and he has grown about 2.5-3" in diameter so one could fit for a little while, but growth varies ray to ray

Ok. Ya. So my next question is. How long will it take them to reach adult size? Bcuz I know with other fish, they shoot up to a certain size really fast, usually 12" in just about a year and then slow down.

Hello. I would first recommend getting a motoro ray but youll need a wider tank in the furture, they are very hardy and perfect for a new ray keeper, all rays do great with cichla as long as the cichla of course is bigger enough not to be lunch I'll say at least 7-8 inches with any kind of ray no matter what size. For the substrate question pool filter sand is perfect its real cheap and easy to get, and of course rinse the sand before putting it in your tank, and now for the growth rate motoros will grow about a inch per month with the proper feeding quantites and of course the proper nutrition maybe a little less. If you have any more questions fill free to pm me.
