I got my first umbee 2 weeks ago from Gage @ cichlid connection. He was sold to me as an f1 male which I assume is right since he's a reputable vendor here. He's around 3.5" and there's no real color or trailers yet except for a little spangling on his cheeks. He lives in a 150 gal with a 4" columbian "shark" catfish that I put there to clean any food he misses.

He's very skittish though... he spends all day swimming around but rushes to hide as soon as I approach the tank and doesn't come out again unless I drop food or leave. Even when I drop food he seems to think twice and sometimes he won't eat until I go away. Water parameters are perfect and temperature is 82 F. I also tried a JD dither but it got skinned alive in a few hours. found it with no scales or tail next to the filter intake.

I thought umbee were very owner responsive and real glass bangers. At what size did yours stop being shy?:confused:

it depends on the fish..but as he mature he will be more aggressive. my boys started to glass bang @ 5". You should also post a picture :]. You heard rite that umbees are owner responsive.. my umbees knows when I walk into the house and starts swimming left and right of the tank waiting for me to feed him. UMBEEs are amazing fish.

Try the dempsey thing again but this time divide the tank. This will allow the dempsey to be safe and they'll both start displaying territorial colors and attitudes. After a month or so you should be able to get rid of the dempsey and the divider and your umbee should be confident and colored up.

@wedameese those umbee are sick! I wish mine looked like that lol! I'll post pics soon...

@freshwaterpredators I'll do that! thanks :)

Btw he's been digging a pit in the sand.... front right corner of the tank... no idea what's the point. I've had cichlids dig caves and stuff but this one is just digging in the middle of the substrate.

looking nice bro! I cant tell at this point but I'm sure it will change as he/she mature. Thats a nice umbee. keep the updates coming.
