I took my chameleon to the vet today and he said he has rickets. He is in really bad shape just laying on his side in pain. i did what the vet told me to do and he doesn't seem to be doing better. now he has two red things coming out the back of him. does anyone know what these are and what i can do to help him. the vet seemed to think he could recover but its not looking good

well, i hope for the best but how long has he had it. sound to me like he has had it for a while bc its bad. usually u wanna try and catch it soon and take it to the vet. i wish i could help u but mine had the same thing happen and the vet said it was to bad already and he died the next day. do what the vet said and hope for the best. put a towel over the cage an dont bug him. less stress the better. keep all the bright lights off. if u have any other lizards in there or crickets take them all out. goodluck hope for the best

the vet said to get the cage to about 90-95 degrees and get it really humid. he also said to get it to drink and eat from an eyedropper he gave me. i got it to drink a little of the formula stuff he said to use and his color is a little better but he still looks really bad i have a sheet over the cage with a humidifier going to raise the humidity any other ideas?

i have no idea how long he has had it but obviously awhile since he looks so bad. the vet seemed to think he could make it but im not too optimistic looking at him. he said i got bad advice from the pet store i bought him from.

well if he took some of the meds from the eye droper that is a good sign. mine didnt. all i can say is do what the vet says and hope for the best.

does it mean anything that his inverted hemipenes are out?

Well, normally they shouldn't be out. Not sure what causes that to happen or the best way to fix it, but I know that's probably what they are.

His hemipenes are prolapsed. He needs to see a Vet ASAP. Make sure the Vet know about reptiles BEFORE you go - many people show up with reptiles to dog/cat vets and are not happy with the service they receive, or the bill.

It can be caused by a lot of things - dehydration, type of substrate, a combo of both, etc...

get some UV light on it. Get some supplements with calcium and vitamin C into his diet immediately. if its not in terrible shape this should help. it won't correct the bone deformities but will make it stronger. on animals i've had. i mixed a multivitamins with room temp milk and force fed the vitamins. hopethis can help you. good luck

:iagree: make sure you see a reptile doc. if you already haven't. Once someone gave me a snow corn snake:naughty: that they "feed" a cooked chix leg,STUPID, snake must have been starving to even eat the thing. anyway when i took it to the vet he sais it should digest the cooked bone,i didn't see how this was possible, the bone was in the snake for at least 3 weeks you could easily see the contour. anyway not being satisfied with "professional help" i took the snake to a reptile store and the owner massaged the bone back out of the snakes mouth:eek: . Moral of the story, get a second oppinion from someone that knows about the kind of animal that needs help. Hope everything turns out good for your buddy:D
