hello all, i was thinking about starting a mini planted tank. something on the scale of where it will fit on my small computer desk. i was thinking about getting a 2 gallon eclipse tank with some low light plants, possibly some cherry shrimp, a snail, with black substrate. i was just wondering what you guys think of it? any input would be much appreciated!

Nano tanks are cool...I'd never had one but I guess you can put together some low light plants and some moss to make it look cool,...I have seen awesome nano tanks before so they are possible..Good Luck

sorry nothing to do with your question but i do like that evo in your avatar...yours?...if so wow

Small tanks can look good, but remember they are often more work than large tanks, as far more trimming is needed.

Hi--I have a 3 gallon eclipse on my desktop at work and I LOVE it. It's quite a bit different now than it was in the photo as everything has grown quite a bit. But I really enjoy it. Currently I have 5 neon tetras, 2 dwarf african frogs, and 1 oto in it. The lighting seems to work good, I love the filter, and it's quiet.

My best advice, keep up on 25% water changes EVERY WEEK with this size of tank. A couple times I got lazy and tried to go two weeks between changes; my fish/frogs survived, but the tank starts getting gross quick.

Cheers!

i was thinking about doing the 3 gallon but i don't think i have any room on this dinky desk =P...as for fish, i don't think i will be putting much in...maybe 2 or 3, and a little tiny drift wood with java moss. im picking up the cherry shrimps on friday so everything should be complete but this sunday...(ill just use water out of my 55g community so i wont have to wait to cycle this little tank)...ill try to post pics as soon as i can..im excited:headbang2

Using water from your other tank won't do much. If you add only plants, you won't need to cycle.

sounds like a fun project, i have a 7 gallon long tank that im going to turn into a semi planted tank, mostl ikely doing japonica shrimp and a few cardinals

go for a shrimp only tank. thats what my 5.5 gallon is and they are one of the most active fish......(if you could call them that) that i have and plus they breed semi easily (depending on the shrimp) wyldfya has some shrimp at a good price....check out his link.

Caridina japonica is an invalid scientific name. That species has been changed to Caridina multidentata which is a species that was named predating C. japonica.

sounds like a good idea...i think ill just be doing cherry shrimps and snails with the java moss now...and i opt to change for a 3 gallon instead of a 2 gallon...my desk is small but ill make room for it! :grinno:
