I actually have not yet found a pump that claims lower wattage per gph.

viaaqua 2300 - 740 gph - 46 watts
mag drive 7 - 700 gph - 60 watts
Here's one - lifeguard aquatics quiet one 3000 - 780 gph - 40 watts
eheim hobby pump 1260 - 635 gph - 65W

Are the cheap manufacturers lying?

I just ordered a ViaAqua 1800 to replace the Quiet One 1200 in the sump on my 100g tank. It only uses 2.5 more watts but pushes about 200 more gph according to the manufacturer. I figured for $20 it is worth a shot...

It should be here tomorrow, I will let you know how it compares to the Quiet One pumps I use now. I won't be able to give an exact # as far as GPH goes but I have had a few different pumps on this setup. I will be able to tell if it's pushing what it should be just from looking at the outlet.

ViaAqua, CA, and a number of other "branded" China pumps work quite well.
Quiet and dependable, these pumps have let me get into a large number of projects that "expensive" pumps would have stopped.
If I needed a specific GPH, I have always gone for the next higher output, than listed.
Add that Dr.F&S will stand behind their sales.

The quiet one 3000 and 4000 are very efficient. The others aren't as good.
